Nine

Kreed

I spent the entirety of yesterday with Masen and Cody, and it was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time. Though I don’t feel the same connection with Masen as I do with Cody, I can’t help but think that I’d have actually preferred it to have been me and Tania that day, rather than either of the siblings. In fact, I’ve been wanting it to be just me and Tania for a while now. And that kind of wanting will only end in heartbreak.

I dig my pills out of my pocket and swallow down two with a sip of water. Masen and Cody are just a bit of fun while we’re here at Coney Island. A bit of fun that will keep Tania from falling for me any more than she already has. But maybe fun isn’t what I want anymore. Is it selfish to not want to hurt someone you care about? Even if I were to give in to my desire to be with Tania as more than friends, it will end in tragedy. Sooner rather than later. We have no chance at a long and happy life together, and I want to spare her that pain as best I can, but maybe it’s not only my decision to make.

Fuck. I need to talk to Tania. It will have to wait until after the show though, as Vayla is already on stage, and before long it will be Tania’s turn, then mine.

Tania deviates from her typical act and I feel a sense of pride at the way she holds the crowd captivated by her strength and beauty. She’s always been scared to show the extent of her talents to anyone outside of the Carnaval, but I knew that when she did, she’d receive the praise she deserves. The smile doesn’t leave my face as I perform, and I’m eager to talk with Tania once I’m finished.

As soon as the stagehands release me from the suspension setup, I follow in the direction I saw Tania rush off in, only to be stopped by a couple of women from tonight’s crowd.

“Your act was so fascinating,” one says, running a finger down my chest and I resist the urge to pull away. The crowd pays for our food and necessities, I can’t brush them off even though I really want to.

“Yeah, fascinating and dangerous,” her friend chimes in.

“Thank you, ladies. I’m glad you enjoyed the show tonight.” I glance around as I flirt with the women. My eyes lock on Tania talking to a man near the storage trailer, and I frown. “Excuse me. I’m sorry, but I need to take care of something. You ladies should come back tomorrow,” I say with a wink and a smile, though inside I am fuming at the possibility of Tania seeing someone else. Is this what she goes through every time I flirt with a man or woman?

I don’t bother with pleasantries as I close the distance between us.
